Mental Health Support in the Workplace and Community (Digital)

This course is a combination of the following units of competency:

  • CHCCCS019 Recognise and respond to crisis situations
  • CHCMHS001 Work with people with mental health issues

This course provides participants with the knowledge required to establish relationships, clarify needs, and then work collaboratively with people who are living with mental health issues. Also recognise situations where people may be in imminent crisis, and then work collaboratively to minimise any safety concerns and make plans to access required support services.

CHCMHS001 Work with people with mental health issues
  • legal and ethical considerations (international, national, state/territory, local) when working with people with mental health issues, and how these are applied in organisations and individual practice
  • values and principles of the mental health sector
  • different contexts of mental health work
  • impact of own attitudes on working with people with mental health issues
  • key issues facing people with mental health illnesses, including impact of prejudice and discrimination
  • myths and facts about mental illness
  • types of mental illness
  • existing services to address a person’s needs and rights
  • appropriate responses to changes in mental health, mental distress and crisis
  • circumstances in which referral to a health or other professional is appropriate
 
CHCCCS019 Recognise and respond to crisis situations
  • legal and ethical consideration relevant to recognising and responding to crisis situations codes of practice
  • organisation policies and procedures for responding to crisis situations, including:
    • potential suicide
    • threats to harm others
    • self harm
  • common indicators or signs of crisis in other people
  • personal values, beliefs and attitudes that facilitate or impede crisis care
  • principles and practices of crisis intervention:
  • referral options and procedures for accessing services
  • principles and practices of self-care and supervision

Units of Competency

On successful completion of this course, students will be eligible for a Statement of Attainment (SOA) for:

  • CHCMHS001 Work with people with mental health issues
  • CHCCCS019 Recognise and respond to crisis situations

An SOA will be issued by Skills Network within 30 days of completion of the course, provided all USI, fees and charges have been finalised.

The units of competency listed above are current on the National Register of VET at the time of publication.

Course Requirements

Successful completion of this course requires participants to work with at least 3 people with mental health issues in ways that support individual empowerment and recovery and have been involved in crisis intervention activities on at least 3 occasions.

Foundation skills are the underpinning communication skills required for participation in the workplace, the community and in adult education and training.

Learning – to understand mental health support principles and apply crisis response strategies.
Reading – to interpret referral protocols, support plans, and mental health service information.
Writing – to complete documentation for debriefing.
Oral communication – to engage empathetically with individuals in distress and collaborate with support teams.
Numeracy – to monitor time-sensitive interventions and interpret data from incident reports.

All training and assessment materials and equipment will be supplied throughout the course. Students will need to bring a blue or black pen and wear comfortable, casual clothing.

Delivery Modes

Up to 25 hours of pre-course learning, and up to 16 hours of classroom training and assessment

Training and assessment can be adjusted to account for specific workplace requirements and the existing skills and knowledge of the students.

Locations

Training and assessment may be held at a training facility or on a client’s site. Please contact us for more information.

Renewal

No renewal required. However, ongoing professional development may be encouraged by employers or industry bodies to stay current with best practices and evolving mental health standards.
